Duke's department of mechanical engineering and materials science offers PhD, master of science and master of engineering degrees. Each graduate student's program is developed individually within very broad limits and is carefully designed to meet his or her needs and objectives.
Within the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, the faculty-student ratio is high, and programs of study are unusually flexible in meeting the needs of individual students. Student coursework for each degree follows an approved curriculum and is decided upon in consultation with the director of graduate studies and the student's faculty research supervisor.
