PS
The American Studies Department requires a personal statement of no more than 750 words to accompany your PhD application. The department's graduate admissions committee reads these essays carefully, and they are an important factor in our consideration of candidates. What we are looking for, first, is a bit of intellectual autobiography to understand how you gained an interest in American Studies, what particular questions or issues in the field you see yourself pursuing, and why these are important. Second, you should tell us why you think our department is an appropriate place for you. Explain how your interests intersect with the research interests of the faculty and the focus of the department. We want to know that you have considered your professional development and that we are the appropriate faculty to direct your intellectual work. Third, the essay needs to lay out your career aspirations. In what sort of job do you see yourself working after you have the degree, and how will the degree make this possible?
The Statement of Purpose is an unusual challenge. It requires both an intellectual and professional accounting of your academic work, career goals, intellectual interests, and the relation of these to the GW faculty strengths. In addition, it requires some personal information about your intellectual passions, convictions, and desires. Take the appropriate amount of time to compose a thoughtful, well-written essay.
GPA
At the PhD level, admissions are competitive. Although GW requires only a 3.0 undergraduate GPA, the successful PhD candidate usually has a 3.4 or higher.
Fee
Application fee: $75
RL
This is an academic program, and we are looking for letters that attest to your intellectual training, competence, skills, and career interests. Of the three required letters, at least two need to be from faculty who have worked with you or from supervisors who have directed work that has a strong intellectual focus, such as curating a museum exhibit, putting together a film festival, or organizing a lecture series. If you have a non-academic letter, it should attest not just to your sterling qualities as a person, but to your motivation for the long, hard, invigorating work of pursuing a PhD.
