RL
The best letters of recommendation come from individuals who can speak from direct experience about an applicant’s personal strengths and weaknesses, academic accomplishments, and potential in doctoral studies. Professors, advisors, or mentors would normally have this sort of knowledge of an applicant. Work supervisors and colleagues or friends generally cannot offer adequate assessments.
We require letters, preferably on letterhead, that can effectively address an applicant’s strengths and weaknesses in an academic setting, compare the applicant to other students of similar class standing, and assess his or her potential of success in completing a rigorous doctoral program and continuing in a career involving gerontology.
