TOEFL
For purposes of admission, your most recent score must be at least 90 for the Internet-based test (IBT), and 570 for the paper-based format (PBT). Please contact individual academic departments for more information, as they may choose to require a higher score.
The IBT emphasizes integrated skills so its format and scoring are different from the PBT version of the TOEFL. Please plan to take the TOEFL as soon as possible, regardless of the test’s format, to avoid delays in the review of your application.
IELTS
As an exception, you can submit scores from the Academic Modules of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), which is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP:IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.
You are responsible for providing us with an official Test Report Form (TRF) of your IELTS. Remember to order the TRF when you register to take the test. For Fall 2018, tests taken before June 1, 2015 will not be accepted. Your most recent overall Band score must be at least 7 on a 9-point scale.
GRE
Scores for the GRE General Test and Subject Test in English (scores from tests taken after November may not reach us in time). GRE Institution Code: 4833, Department Code: 2501 Please note that ETS has changed the Subject Test exam dates in 2013. For the last three years, the tests were offered in April, September and October. There was no November test. Expect the same test months in 2017. Your application will not be considered without the the General and Subject test scores. We can not take a subject GRE exam from next April for this year's cycle.
GRE scores are good for as long as ETS will send them to institutions (5 years from the test date). If you previously applied to a graduate program at UC Berkeley, we cannot use your scores if they are more than 5 years old.
